My wife and I have lived in the Canary Islands for more than fifty years, and have had a house on the smallest and westernmost, El Hierro, since the late seventies. Now we are retired, we live here permanently.

People have an odd idea of the Canaries, derived from holiday resorts that mirror holiday resorts anywhere else in the world. In fact, though, the islands are extremely varied and beautiful, and they are inhabited by real people whose idiosyncrasies have been shaped by their geography and history.

El Hierro is our forgotten island, the least visited and in some ways the most interesting. In this blog I aim to build up an alternative picture that for the discerning visitor complements the official one of the island where I have spent some of the happiest years of my life.
